I Wish I Was A Mexican
My dad gave me the idea for this one. One day he mentioned to me, "You should write a song called, "I Wish I Was A Mexican." I couldn't stop smiling. What a great idea! With an idea like that how could it not be a hit. All I have to do is share the title with people and it evokes a good laugh and a smile. From the get go I knew I couldn't go wrong, yet I felt a lot of personal pressure that I had to write the perfect words, and I think I did.
Lyrically I tried to find reasons why I would want to be a Mexican. Surprisingly it was quite easier than I thought it would be. We live in a United States where our government has lied to us. Our social security numbers are now used as tracking numbers when we were promised that they would just be used for the social security system. We are for the most part no longer paid in cash, and our cash isn't back by gold as it once was. In country music most cowboys, ranchers & farmers appreciate wide open spaces and working on the range, yet everyday thanks to modernization and urban sprawl america's cowboy's, farmers, and ranchers are now living in cities and have jobs where they find themselves working in a cubicles trying to fight there way to the top. It's the Mexicans who still get to work in the beautiful fields and country.
Mexicans love futbol (soccer) like American's love footbal which makes a fun play on words. Mexicans tend to be very social within their culture and will often ride together, hence my line, "I don't have a carpool buddy." Most of us wish we would have studied more Spanish in high school and many complain about having to press 2 in America when making a call.
In summary, this song represents a neat twist on viewing Mexicans who are living in the states illegally. In many ways they enjoy more freedom than a United States Tax paying citizen. Ironic? Si!

With a little sweat on my back
Coming home to watch futbol

Taking Spanish in high school
Cause all the channels I can't understand
And I like to press 2 every now and again

If I was a Mexican I'd have a Margarita
And I'd be dancing Salsa with a hot Senorita
And when the marachi band quits playing
You'll all be hearing me saying....AyAyAy

Pagado en efectivo
Trabajando en el campo
Con sudor que disfruto
Llegaria a la casa
Para ver futbol con la familia
